A beginner-to-intermediate course in easy English. Every lesson follows the same plan: definition, deep explanation, formula, examples, working and practice.
Grade 2: Listen and Play
25 lessons on playing what you hear: follow a tune, keep its rhythm, find its scale and add the chords. Ends with a music theory formula reference.
Music Theory Reference
The reference part at the back of Grade 2: Listen and Play, sorted by topic. Every chord and scale here is given for all 12 keys. Tap a topic to open the book on its page.
Scales, intervals and the circle of fifths
Pick a key or an interval and the keyboard shows and plays it.
12 tones and 7 tones
All music uses the same 12 notes. A scale picks 7 of them by a pattern of whole (W) and half (H) steps.
Intervals
An interval is the distance between two notes. Count both notes: C to E is C (1), D (2), E (3), a 3rd.
Circle of fifths
Going clockwise, each key is a 5th higher and adds one sharp. Going anticlockwise adds one flat. The two keys beside any key are its IV and V chords.

39 pagesScales and chords in every key
Pick Keyboard or Guitar. Each one has major, minor and chromatic scales in all 12 keys, a chord finder with inversions, and chord shapes you can hear.
Scales in all 12 keys
Pick a scale type, then tap any key to see it on the keyboard and hear it. W = whole step (2 half steps), H = half step.
Keyboard chord finder
Guitar scales in tab
Six lines are the six strings (high e on top, low E at the bottom). The number is the fret to press, 0 = open string. Play left to right: up the scale, then back down.
Guitar chord finder
Choose a root and a chord type. Dots show where to press, o = play the open string, x = don't play it. The notes under the strings are what each string sounds.
Inversions are played on neighbouring strings: the lowest string you play gives the bass note. Play only the strings without an x.
The chords of a key
Stack every other note of the major scale and you get 7 chords. Capital numerals are major, small ones are minor, ° is diminished and + is augmented.
Guitar chord shapes
Numbers are fingers (1 = index, 4 = little). o = play the open string, x = don't play it. Tap a chord to hear it strummed.
